I find that art is an incredible method of making sense of all of the various aspects of living. For me, problem solving and internal contemplation always seems to become clear when I am creating. I will the themes of these aspects to build a world in which my future piece will take place. Often, like in the case of this rough draft version of chapter 1 of "Hellion", I spent hours mapping out the inner workings and details of this world before finally starting to work on the main piece. This is invaluable for depicting scenes with underlying narratives, and provides me with an opportunity to fill the composition of a piece with interesting yet believable background detail.
I brainstorm and plan out each project before creating it. First in pencil, then in ink. I typically do two to three drafts before starting the final product.
I design characters for fun, and so it is something I do everyday. I consider it to be a fun creative exercise, and it often leads me into larger projects. I also enjoy using character design as means of telling a broader story.
